German Gambling Regulator Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Gambling

The German gambling regulator, Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL), has increased its efforts to combat illegal gambling within the country. This move includes more frequent inspections and enforcement actions targeting unlicensed gambling operators. The regulator is also strengthening its cooperation with payment service providers to prevent transactions linked to illegal gambling sites, aiming to cut off financial flows that sustain unauthorized activities. Alongside these enforcement measures, the GGL has initiated public awareness campaigns to inform consumers about the risks associated with illegal gambling and to educate them on recognizing properly licensed operators. These intensified actions come in response to a surge in illegal gambling providers attempting to exploit loopholes following the implementation of the State Treaty on Gambling in 2021. The regulatory authority stresses that its priority remains the protection of consumers and maintaining the integrity of Germany’s regulated gambling market.
